Fairbury Public Library Reopens-Investigation Continues

The Fairbury Public Library reopened its doors to the public after being closed for three days earlier this week as part of an investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.A sign posted on the door of the Fairbury Public Library Monday morning, July 17, stated, “Library closed until further notice.”On Saturday, July 15, 2023 at approximately 12:41 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by staff at the Library in regards to someone potentially using the public access computers in the library in an inappropriate manner. Deputies went to the library and met with staff and learned that the computers may have been used to access sexually explicit materials, some of which could possibly have included images of minor children, although that has not been confirmed.The sheriff’s office contacted the Nebraska State Patrol Technical Crimes Investigations Team to assist with the investigation. At this time the case in still under investigation as the Tech Crimes Unit attempts to see what all content may have been viewed or accessed on the computers.The library was closed by City Officials to help preserve any evidence that may be housed on their computers or servers.Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown said, “The Sheriff’s Office has received full cooperation from city officials and Library staff while we try and figure out what may have been accessed on the public computers in the Library.”The Mayor also said, “I would like to express a sincere thanks to the Sheriff's Office and my staff that responded to this situation. Also a thanks to the citizens of Fairbury for your patience and understanding. The safety of our citizens and more importantly our children is our top priority.”FJN reached out to the Sheriff Nick Georgi for an update, “There is currently no one in custody. We do know who was all at the library and who all used the computers that day. We are waiting and working with the Nebraska State Patrol Technical Crimes Unit as they analyze the library computers to see if any illegal content was actually accessed on the computers.”This case remains under investigation as of press time.
