We are now in the season of Lent that Christians observe every year just before Easter. It began on Ash Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday, not counting the Sundays in between, as they are still considered days of celebration. Lent is a period of 40 days during which Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ, whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity.
I think there are a lot of factors to blame for Copa being cancelled.
When I first moved here in 1997, people started saying 'Copa Season' about mid-February. It was a big deal. All day food, acts, art, music, community. When we moved back six years ago, it was still a big deal, not as big as it was in the late 80s, early 90s, but a big deal nonetheless.
You had to audition to get in and then there were coveted slots that everyone vied for and Copa was the premiere event of the region. This was a huge pride point for FHS and Fairbury in general.

So how 'bout this weather, huh?
So this week, not just Nebraska but much of the U.S. entered a serious deep freeze. And the thing about cars is that most of them don't particularly like the cold. When the temp dips below zero, both you and your car have a hard time getting out of bed. You'd rather just roll over, pull the covers over your head and go back to sleep. Why should your car be any different?
City councilman Kelly Davis wants to withhold money from the contractors that installed the curb and gutter in the City Park.
Now, there can be a perception issue here. Maybe he’s really picky and the job was done correctly, just not up to his standard or taste? Maybe it was done horribly and needs to be re-done?
The fact remains that a customer was unhappy with a project and is withholding money, even if it is $1.

Once again the Super Bowl has come and gone and, as usual, more people are talking about the commercials more than the game itself. It is a bizarre phenomenon. Ads are supposed to pay for the game, yet have somehow become more entertaining than the game. If someone could figure out a way to bet on commercials instead of the game, more money would be won and lost on Budweiser and Doritos than whoever scored that last winning touchdown.
The English language has only one word for “love.” We overuse this word and stretch its meaning to describe a wide range of sentiments. The same word we use to describe our affection for our spouses and children we also use to express how we feel about ice cream and pizza. Often, when we say we love something, what we really mean is we love how this thing make us feel. We love a song because of the memories and emotions the tune brings to mind. We love coffee for its aroma and caffeine.

There are certain things that we anticipate with great...uh, anticipation. Yet, somehow, there are never as good as we imagined them to be. The mind's eye is a great liar.
As a child, I spent a lot of time at the house where Grandma and Grandpa lived. It was a big, solid, old house. It must have been built about 1880, about the same time when the whole town moved from the lakeside up to the new railhead. So I was very familiar with the main floor, and the upstairs where four of the bedrooms were, and the basement where there was old furniture, shelves filled with cans of food, old books, the furnace and washer and dryer, and a big bench with all of Grandpa’s tools.
