Trojans Claim Four Medals At State

Tri County’s Lady Trojans and Trojans track teams put forth solid efforts at Omaha Burke Stadium for the two-day NSAA State Track and Field Championships last weekend.
The Lady Trojans had five athletes compete in three events both on Friday and Saturday. 
At the close of the meet Saturday afternoon, the Lady Trojans had placed in two events and scored six points to finish in a three-way tie for 31st place in the Class C girls team race.
Tri County wasted no time cashing in on a medal Friday morning, as the Lady Trojans’ 3200-meter relay team of Halle Weise, Kailey Weichel, Sloane Holtmeier, and Haydyn Weise placed fourth in the event with a time of 9:52.39.
The fourth place finish by the Lady Trojans in the relay accounted for five team points.
Saturday morning, junior Haydyn Weise and sophomore Kailey Weichel took part in the Class C Girls 800-Meter Run.

Time To Shine

Both Diller-Odell track and field teams saved their best for the big stage this past weekend at the NSAA State and Track Field Championships held at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Saturday was a special day for the two squads, as four athletes came away with state medals in their respective events in the Class D field.
Junior Madison Hajek got things rolling for Diller-Odell, as she earned the silver medal in the Class D Girls High Jump clearing the bar at 5’2”.
Christian McCown, a junior on the Griffins’ track and field team came through placing sixth in the Class D Boys Long Jump with a mark of 20’ 21/2”.
Junior Cory Engelman claimed the sixth place medal in the Class D Boys Pole Vault with a vault of 12’10”.
Senior Bladen Ahl just finished out of the medals placing 10th in the field of 23 competitors in the Class D Boys Pole Vault with a clearance of the bar at 12’0”.

Schwan Family Gives Donation To Fairboard

The Schwan Family made a donation of $1,200 to the Jefferson County Fair Board for the new Concession Stand and Restroom at the Horse Arena. The donation was made in memory of Richard Schwan who enjoyed horses and horse events. Bakewell Anniversary

The family of Robert and Jane (Fairchild) Bakewell is happy to share that the next few months will be a special time in their lives. June 3 will be the couple’s 65th wedding anniversary. June 23 will be Robert’s 90th birthday, followed by Jane's 90th birthday on August 7. The couple’s family will host a celebratory open house for family and friends at their rural Endicott home on July 10 from 2-4 p.m.
Natives of the Endicott area, Jane taught for over 30 years at Fairbury High School and the former Fairbury Junior College. After working several year for Beatrice Motors, Robert (Bob) was a Fairbury businessman and owner for over 50 years, operating a finance company, insurance agency and used car dealership.           

Club News

The General Squires V.F.W. Auxiliary 3113 came to order at 7:30 p.m. with President Joy Graham presiding. Guard Susan closed the doors and Conductress Marge checked 15 members cards. Chaplain Linda gave opening prayer and Patriotic Instructor LaDonna Shalla gave patriotic instructions. We all said the Pledge to the Flag. President Joy opened the meeting. Voted on a new member Sharon McDonald. She will be welcomed at next month's meeting. Secretary Zona read the minutes and they were approved. Treasurer Cynthia gave her report and it will be put on file. Correspondence was read by Zona. Batter Up newsletter from Department, a letter from National Home and a thank you from the Seaman family for the memorial for their mother, who passed away. A motion was made to have the auxiliary buy pins for auxiliary members since they will no longer have ladies auxiliary on them. It carried. Memorial service was held for our deceased members.



The family of Leroy and Pauline Niederklein would like to honor them with a card shower for their 55th Wedding Anniversary. The couple were married May 28, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church Tobias where they remain active members. They are the parents of Jerry Niederklein of Syracuse, Renae (Bob) DeWald of Smithville, Mo. and Terry ( Stephanie) Niederklein of O'Neill. They are blessed and keep busy with their seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Pioneer Shrine Club Scholarship

McKehna Bartels has been selected as the Meridian recipient of a Pioneer Shrine Club Scholarship.  This $800 scholarship is presented to a high school senior who best exemplifies good citizenship and high moral character, without regard to scholastic standing and parental finances, and is to be used at an institution of higher learning or technical training center of their choice. 

Wiedel and Fett to Wed

Robert David Wiedel and Caitlin Marie Fett are happy to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. 
Caitlin is the daughter of Darrell and Jane Fett of Hickman and Quince and Lori Michl of Lincoln.
Robert is the son of David and Becky Wiedel of Hebron.
Caitlin graduated from Fairbury High School in 2007 and graduated from Peru State College in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, Special Education, and Early Childhood Education.  She is a Special Education teacher at Schuyler Elementary School.
Robert graduated from Thayer Central High School in 2008.  He is a machine operator at Tenneco Automotive Inc. in Seward.
The couple will reside in David City.
The couple will exchange vows on June 4, 2016 at United Methodist Church in Chester. 

Kappelmann Birth

Brianna Nevils and Antonio Kappelmann announce the birth of their daughter, Amorette Rose on April 16, 2016 at 5:47 p.m. The little miss weighed in at six lbs. 13 oz. and 18 inches long.
Grandparents are Naomi Baker of Texas, Jackie Nevils of Fairbury, Becki Snyder, Sioux City, Iowa and Brian Kappelmann, Kearney.
Maternal great-grandparents are Belinda and Joseph day and Audrey and Joseph Pelt, all from Texas. Paternal great-grandparents are Diana Mathiason, Alberta Lea, Minnesota and Keith and Rita Snyder of Fairbury.
