Superintendent’s Hobby Showcases Students

Photography has always been a part of Fred Helmink's life, yet the Fairbury Public Schools superintendent said he has never had any formal training. His dad, Maurice, always had a 35mm camera in hand, Helmink said. Like father, like son, except the son carries a digital Nikon camera these days.
“I'm not an expert,” Helmink said. “I just like taking pictures.”
Helmink almost always has a camera with him, he said, and his family jokes that he must have lost his camera when he shows up to functions without it.
The Norris grad began taking school pictures in 1978 when he was a vocal music teacher. He took a lot of pictures of the students at various events, he said.
After nine years of teaching he became a principal and offered to take photos at events. After all, he said, he was going to be there anyway so he might as well take photos.
