More Problems For The Roads Dept.

while working on the roads in jefferson county this motorgrader sunk into the road between Fairbury and Gladstone on 562 Avenue due to undermining that occurred with the recent flooding . (Contributed Photo)
More roads have been closed since an incident happened on 562 Ave. north of highway 136 between Fairbury and Gladstone. To avoid further accidents, the roads are being worked on to ensure safe driving conditions.
Bryce Huss, an employee for the roads department was working on 562 Ave. attempting to repair the flood damaged road and the motor grader sunk into the road.
The accident happened at the edge of a bridge where the road had been “undermined” giving way under the weight of the grader. Undermining is when a lower layer of the road is washed away during flooding, but the top layer is left, making the road look safe to drive on.
Bill Hansel, Highway Superintendent for Jefferson County stated, this is a good example of why we close and barricade the roads, it may look safe, but that is not always the case and someone could get seriously injured if they drive on a closed road.
