After 13 years of heading up the District 8 school system, superintendent Fred Helmink will be retiring at the end of June.
During the Local Focus program which aired last week on local radio station KGMT/KUTT Helmink said it was time to move on but gave no concrete reason for leaving the Fairbury school district.
"Kathy (Helmink's wife) and I decided to make the announcement together," he said. "I will be looking for another position whether it be inside or outside of education."
"It has been 13 fantastic years but I think the timing is right with three new board members coming on," Helmink added. Three new members were elected to the school board and will take office early next year: Sharon Ebke, Barb Arner and Alan Stall.
