Tri County Lady Trojans basketball team made just enough key plays down the stretch to earn a 39-35 road win last Tuesday against Class D-1 state rated Diller-Odell.
The Lady Trojans were all business in the game scoring the first four points of the game for a 4-0 lead.
Diller-Odell fought back tying the game at 5 with :55 seconds left in the quarter on a two-point hoop by Madison Hajek.
A two-point field goal from Sloane Holtmeier with less then :40 seconds on the clock gave Tri County a 7-5 lead after one quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, Diller-Odell tied the game at 12 off a three-point basket from Bailey Schroeder.
Following a two-point hoop from the Lady Griffins’ Madison Jurgens which drew the home team within a point at 17-16, Tri County finished out the first half on a 4-0 run behind two-point field goals by Haydyn Weise and Halle Weise which stretched Tri County’s lead at half to 21-16.

Second Time Not The Charm For Jeffs

It’s always tough to play a team twice, and the Fairbury Jeffs found that out Saturday afternoon versus York in consolation action of the Central Conference Boys Basketball Tournament held at Grand Island Northwest High School.
The Jeffs came up short to the Dukes losing, 63-34.
Just eight days earlier, York had defeated Fairbury on the Jeffs’ home floor by thirty points.
York raced out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter of play and kept the upperhand the rest of the game outscoring Fairbury, 45-26.
Fairbury Jeffs head coach Adam Brill remarked that the Jeffs played hard against a very tough and athletic York squad.
“I felt the boys played hard in the game against a very talented individually skilled York team. Our kids battled throughout the game, as with a young team the boys are going through a learning process to get better each and every time we step on the court,”said Brill.

T.C. Can’t Get Win At Conference

Competing at home for the final time in the month of January, both Tri County basketball teams came up short in a pair of losses on Thursday to Southern Nebraska Conference opponent Heartland.
In the girls game, Tri County got off to a decent start building a 23-16 lead on the Lady Huskies at halftime.
However, the second half went the other way for the Lady Trojans, as their offense was held in check scoring just 12 second half points, while Heartland’s offense awoke burning the nets for 35 points.
Nine players scored for Tri County in the game led by Shae Wattjes with eight points, Haydyn Weise, six points, Miranda Vogt, five points, Sloane Holtmeier and Delaney Uher, four points apiece, and Madison Freese, Shalayna Niemeyer, Halle Weise, and Josie Weise each contributed two points.
Vogt had a team-high six rebounds, while Haydyn Weise led the team in assists with three.

Back In My Day

Now that I have kids, I find myself using “Back in my day…” quite often. I always used to scoff at those who talked that way, and now, here I am, doing the same. I see the conversations every snow day of Facebook amongst those I grew up with; we ALWAYS had school, we never got out, kids don’t know what it’s like, etc.
Fact of the matter is simple, times are changing. No longer can buses try busting through snow drifts in an attempt to pick up students. Gone are the days of sliding down E Street while trying to stop at St. Michael’s. Frankly, I’m shocked that even with any snow on the ground, kids have school.
