Swimmers Come Up Short On Senior Night

Both Beatrice-Norris-Fairbury-Freeman swimming and diving teams were dealt losses last Monday evening in a home duel at the Beatrice YMCA versus Lincoln Pius X.
The Lady Thunderbolts won the girls duel by a score of 160-72, while in the boys duel, Lincoln Pius X came out on top, 155.50-77.50.
Monday’s home duel was senior recognition and parent’s night for the Beatrice-Norris-Fairbury-Freeman swimmers and divers.
Individual event placers by Fairbury swimmers included Mikasa Lierman, third, Girls 100 Butterfly, 1:13.54, and she was fourth in the Girls 200 IM at 2:37.08, Colton Starck, fourth, Boys 200 IM, 2:35.96, and a time of 1:00.06 earned Starck fourth in the Boys 100 Free, and RJ Suey was fifth in the Boys 200 Free at 2:22.21, and he finished fifth in the Boys 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:18.04.

Districts This Weekend

 
The make or break weekend is upon high school wrestlers.
Fairbury, Meridian, and Tri County will compete this weekend in their respective two-day district wrestling tournaments.
Fairbury will participate in the 12-team B-3 District Wrestling Tournament to be held at York High School.
First-round competition will begin on Friday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m., and the meet will resume on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Meridian and Tri County will take part in the 19-team D-1 District Wrestling Tournament hosted by Freeman High School in Adams.
First-round action will start on Friday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m., and will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Griffins Go 2-1 At Conference

Diller-Odell’s boys basketball team went 2-1 in Pioneer Conference Tournament games last week.
Sparked by a 20-7 advantage in bench points, Diller-Odell knocked off Southern, 65-47 in consolation action on Saturday.
The Griffins outscored the Raiders, in every quarter of the game improving to 8-11 on the season.
Tybor Smith paced the Griffins in scoring with a game-high 18 points, Peyton Mohr, 17 points, Reese Hennerberg, 11 points, Bladen Ahl, seven points, Dylan Wolbert, five points, Christian McCown, four points, Shane Sutton, two points, while one point was put in by Patrick Meyer.
A sluggish second half of offense by the Griffins proved costly in a 56-45 quarterfinal loss on Wednesday to top seed Nebraska City Lourdes Central Catholic.
Diller-Odell ninth seed in the tournament battled hard in the first half leaving the court at half with a 29-28 lead.

Three Return Home With Medals For T.C.

Tri County competed on Friday at the Southern Nebraska Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Superior High School and brought home three conference medals.
Junior Colby Ensz placed second in the 145-pound weight class, losing his championship match by decision, 5-3 to Thayer Central’s Marshal Holtzclaw.
Cooper Smith and Travis Likens each earned fourth place medals in their respective weight classes.
Smith went 2-2 in his matches at 182 pounds, while Likens at 195 pounds finished with a mark of 2-2.
David City won the Southern Nebraska Conference team championship racking up 243.50 points.
Tri County tied for ninth place with Fillmore Central each scoring 43 points.

Jeffs Third At Holdrege

After finishing eighth place last year, Fairbury was on a mission to place in the top three at Saturday’s 10-team Central Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Holdrege High School.
Fairbury came through a tough day on the mats reaching its goal of placing in the top three with a third place finish in the team race spearheaded by three conference champions, and nine medalists overall.
York was the Central Conference team champion, amassing 212.50 points, Central City finished runner-up with a score of 193 points, and Fairbury racked up 159 points for third.
The Jeffs had a trio of conference champions including senior Justyn Franklin at 152 pounds, sophomore Jacob Johnson at 170 pounds, and junior Patrick Ondrak at 182 pounds.
Franklin won his conference championship by decision, 9-7 over Raymon Mastas of York.
Johnson won his first place match by decision, 6-3 against Crete’s Ethan Sherman.

Lady Griffins Secure Win

A suffocating fourth quarter defense allowed the Diller-Odell Lady Griffins to fight back and secure a 50-44 win against Johnson-Brock in consolation play Saturday in the Pioneer Conference Basketball Tournament.
“This was a good way for the Lady Griffins to bounce back in the Pioneer Conference Tournament after a disappointing first round loss,”remarked Diller-Odell Lady Griffins head coach John Mohr.
Diller-Odell (12-7) was topped in scoring by Madison Hajek with 17 points, Katie Zarybnicky, 13 points, Madison Jurgens, 12 points, Paige Vitosh, five points, Bailey Schroeder, two points, and Katie Schultis contributed one point.

Four Medalists, Fourth Place For Meridian

In its final tournament prior to district action, Meridian’s wrestling team came away with four medalists and a fourth place team finish at last Thursday’s Crossroads Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Cross County High School.
A trio of wrestlers earned second place finishes in their respective weight classes accounting for 34 team points.
Senior Joshua Traynor placed second in the 152-pound weight class posting a record of 2-1.
Junior Baxter Beals finished second in the 160-pound weight class with a mark of 3-1.
Junior Jacob Durflinger posted a second place finish in the 220-pound weight class going 1-1.
Sophomore Micah Noel placed fourth in the 170-pound weight class finishing with a record of 1-3.
High Plains won the Crossroads Conference title amassing a score of 144 points, while Meridian finished with 37 points for fourth place.

Alvin E. Schoenrock

Alvin E. Schoenrock, 88, of Lincoln, formerly of Fairbury, NE, passed away Feb. 5, 2016 in Beatrice. He was born Nov. 19, 1927 in Fairbury.
He is survived by son Mark and his wife Denise Schoenrock, son Merrell Schoenrock, grand-daughters Christie Schoenrock Grayson, Nikki (Ray) Keller, Sarah (Josh) LeMonte, Olivia (John) Spence, great-grandchildren Avery and Jaden Smith, Ivan, Maia and Gideon Keller, and numerous other family and friends.
Services will be Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home Chapel with Sharon Schuster officiating.  The family will greet friends Thursday Feb. 11th from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.  Memorials are suggested to the Fairbury VFW in lieu of flowers.  Burial in the Fairbury Cemetery.  Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fairbury Resident Arrested on Several Charges

 James R. McClain Age 20 of Fairbury was arrested on February 03, 2016 for Alleged Domestic Assault (1 Misdemeanor), Terroristic Threats (3A Felony), Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (3 Felony).

On February 03, 2016 at approximately 2039 hours, officers with the Fairbury Police Department were dispatch to a residence in the 1000 block J Street reference a verbal argument. While officers were enroute to the location, the verbal argument escalated and when the suspect, who was later identified as James R. McClain, heard law enforcement was coming, he took off running on foot. When officers arrived, they located McClain near McNish Park.
