Unsafe, nuisance structures plague neighborhoods throughout the City of Fairbury. A multitude of these structures have been empty for years and are now being condemned and demolished.
Laura Bedlan, Zoning Administrator for the city of Fairbury, works with the Health Board to rid the city of nuisance structures. Bedlan and the Health Board have to follow strict guidelines to condemn and demolish any structure.
“The guidelines we follow, are set by the IPMC or International Property Maintenance Code,” Bedlan said
The city does not procur the property or pay for the demolition. It is mandatory for the owner of the property to pay for the demolition, even if it's owned by the bank. After a structure has been demolished, the property is still the owner’s responsibility, the city will not retain a property after a demolition.
