Virgil Richardson

Virgil Richardson, 96, of Fairbury, NE. quietly left this world and the company of his beloved wife of over 68 years on December 21, 2014, at The Heritage Care Center. The much loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend was born December 25, 1917, to Lora Fields and Lloyd Richardson in South Bend, NE.

Randall Alan Meyer

Randall Alan Meyer, 47, passed away January 9, 2015 on his farm south of Tobias, NE. He was born to Melvin D. and Sharon L. (Ward) Meyer on November 13, 1967 at Fairbury, NE. 
He went to Meridian Public School until the 6th grade and then to Zion Lutheran school for 7th and 8th grade. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1986. He then attended Southeast Community College in Milford and graduated with the class of 1988. He worked for Tuttle, Inc. in Friend for many years. When his dad got sick, he continued helping out on the farm in spare time, raising cattle and tending to the crops. 
He enjoyed traveling, and a couple memorable trips were to Alaska and Australia. He also enjoyed hunting. Randy and his dad enjoyed Collecting International Tractors and Combines both real and toy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin D. Meyer; grandparents, Rudy and Lena Meyer; and cousin, Stanley Meyer.

Freda C. Burkhart

Freda C. Burkhart, daughter of Charles and Freda (Divoky) Drda, was born near Wilber on January 30, 1927.
Freda was baptized on September 9, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Daykin by the Rev. A. L. Kohtz. She confessed her baptismal faith in the rite of Confirmation on September 9, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Daykin.  She was instructed by the Rev. A.L. Kohtz.  Her confirmation verse was Revelation 2:10.  She was admitted to the altar to receive the medicine of immortality, Christ’s life-giving body and blood.
Freda was joined together in holy matrimony to Kenneth F. Burkhart on June 26, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Daykin by the Rev. A. L. Kohtz.  God raised through this union six children, Elizabeth, Audrey, Connie, Ronda, Ritchie, and Craig. 
On January 8, 2015, at the age of 87 years, Freda fell asleep in Jesus at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury.

Dennis W. Kugel

Dennis W. Kugel, 68, of Hebron, NE., passed away January 19, 2015 at home. He was born February 5, 1946 in rural Hubbell, NE. He was a Vietnam Army Veteran. 
Survivors are wife, Sharon Kugel of Hebron; son, Wayne Kugel and wife, Kay of Hebron; daughter, Kris Huss  and husband, Bryce of Fairbury; grandchildren, Cody, Sara, and Emily Huss; Kyle, Kourtlyn, and Kinsley Kugel; sisters, Janette Fangmeier and husband, Dale of Lincoln; Sharon Baden and husband, Marvin of Deshler; Laura Biehl of Lincoln; brother, Delaine Kugel and wife, Sharon of Wahoo. 
 Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday January 23, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church – Hebron, NE., with Pastor Keith Brozek officiating. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thurs. January 22 at the Funeral Home in Fairbury. Burial at the Fairbury Cemetery – Fairbury, NE. In lieu of flowers memorials to Fairbury or Hebron Rural Fire Dept.

Shelby Pollman Named All-State Honorable Mention

Fairbury 6’0” senior outside hitter Shelby Pollman was chosen All-State Honorable Mention for volleyball in Class C-1 by both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha World-Herald.
Pollman led the Lady Jeffs in kills on the season with 243, she had a team-high 364 digs, and put up 22 blocks.
Fairbury Lady Jeffs head volleyball coach Ryan Evans was pleased with the honor earned by Shelby.
“Shelby is very derserving of the award. She worked hard in all our games.Volleyball is not her true love. Basketball is her true love and she is a great basketball player, but it really shows that if you are an athlete you can excel in any sport,” Evans said.
“I’m very pleased that an honor such as this was earned by Shelby,” Evans replied.

Hofstetter Returns Leads Lady Mustangs To Victory

Meridian got a spark Saturday night as leading scorer senior Blair Hofstetter returned to the court after missing a pair of games due to an injury.
Hofstetter was one of three Lady Mustangs to score in double figures, as Meridian evened its season record at 6-6 with a 58-52 overtime win against Shelby-Rising City.
Shelby-Rising City held the upperhand on Meridian for three quarters with a 36-31 lead.
Paced by the scoring of four cagers, Meridian forced overtime by outscoring Shelby-Rising City, 16-11 in the decisive fourth quarter.
Hofstetter led the way in the fourth quarter uprising scoring nine points, while Erin Johnson added four points, Crystal Nunez tossed in two points, and Allison Klipp supplied one point.
In the four-minute overtime, the Lady Mustangs outscored Shelby-Rising City, 11-5 spearheaded by Johnson tallying five points.
