Diller News

The Merry Moderns met on Wednesday, December 10 at the Diller Community Building with senior diners. After lunch, Jane called the meeting to order with ten members present. Jean gave two readings and shared two special Christmas cards from the past and a homemade gift from her brother when they were in elementary, school.
Club member voted to send a monetary gift to hope crisis for Christmas. Christmas cards were signed for our clubs honorary members, Hope and Irene. New heart sister were drawn for 2015. Yearbooks for 2015 were handed out. Jeanette led the group in several games. Then the annual heart sister gifts were exchanged. 
Jeanette served lunch.
 
The Diller Seniors card party was held Dec. 16. High scores for pitch were Carl Lytle and Herb Hertwig. Low scores for pitch were Eva Renz, Jan Gold. Door prize winner was Phyllis Engelman.

Garry Gene Ward

Garry Gene Ward, 60, of Fairbury, NE. Peacefully passed away Tuesday, December 16th at home with his family by his side.
Garry was born to Wayne and Carolyn Ward on March 15.  He was the oldest of 3 children. 
On March 20, 1972 he married Janice Ann Ward in Guthrie , Okla. They were blessed with a son and two daughters. 
For many of his adult years Garry and his father owned their own roofing company “Wards Roofing”. Over the years he had different jobs until his health would longer allow him to do so.
His is survived by his by his best friend and wife, Janice Ward; son, Garry and wife, Diane Ward; daughters, Debbie Sautter and Carol Hasselbring all of Fairbury; grandchildren, Daniel Ellis; Janice Ward, Michael Ward, Amy Ward, Jordan Ward and Riane Ward; sister, Penny and husband, Mike Dickinson of Alma, NE; many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.

Elsie Campbell Penney

Elsie Campbell Penney, 93, formerly of Superior, Ne, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Fairbury, NE. Elsie was born in Schneverdingen, Germany on February 23, 1921, to William and Meta Kuehne. Elsie had two younger sisters Adina Mason and Eileen Eickmann.
Elsie went to school at rural Byron until the eight grade. Due to the economic conditions of the 1930’s she had to quit school and work to help support the family.
On October 9, 1941, Elsie married Roy Campbell of rural Byron. To this marriage one son, Jerry was born on October 11.
Roy and Elsie ran a grocery store in Byron for several years before moving to Ruskin, in 1949. Where they started Ruskin Produce, picking up farmer’s eggs, cream, and chickens for several year. Then she went to work for in Superior at several different jobs before retiring at age 65. Roy and Elsie moved to a new home in Superior. On June 23, 1984 Roy passed away.

Donald R. Gregory

Donald R. Gregory, 80, of Reynolds, passed away December 14th at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury.
Don was born March 20, 1934, in Belleville, KS to Walter and Marion Brennenstuhl Gregory. He attended school at District 44 until the family moved to Reynolds where he finished his education and graduated high school there.
He married Marjorie Prellwitz on September 8, 1956. To them, five children were born.
He was drafted into the army in 1956 and he and Marge moved to Fort Smith, AR. He attained the rank of Sergeant Specialist Fourth Class.

Mentioned in a report from District No. 78 (1 mile east  and 1 ½ south of Thompson), by Nettie Paden, teacher, were Emma and Lee Adkins, Fred and Joe Cawdrey, Bessie, Edith and George Dopp, John Drake, Millie and Roy Fickett, Artie and Eddie Grinstead, Daisy Hughes, Wallace Quinn, Gertie Rhode, Frank and Nellie Sampson, Martha Thompson, Arthur Wagner and George Wheeler.
Ed Waples sold his north side restaurant and bakery to J.B. Lewis of Washington, Kan.  On the west side, Martin Oerter planned a two-story building to be rented to Jack Fitton.
Endicott vicinity residents had rousing “literaries” each Friday evening at the Mount Vernon school south of town.
