  • Lady Titans Advance In Sub-District Play

    The third time was the most important.
    Fourth seed Thayer Central used aggressive play on the boards, coupled with a half court pressure defense to defeat fifth seed Southern, 44-34 in Monday's opening round game in the C2-1 Girls Basketball Subdistrict played at Fairbury Jr.-Sr. High School.
    Thayer Central had defeated Southern just last Friday evening, 30-26, and beat the Lady Raiders, 46-39 at the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 29.

    On National Signing Day high school athletes from across the country sign their letters of intent with their future college program they will be playing for.
    An added element to signing day that has been developing since Twitter began in 2006 is athletes announcements of their top three, top five, or even top 10 schools. Then the celebration of their commitment through graphics and announcement videos.

    Fairbury head wrestling coach Derek Garfield knows it is go time for his team.
    With only a few days until the state-qualifying district tournament, Fairbury needed to have a strong showing at Friday’s Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament to ensure confidence and build momentum heading into their second most important tournament of the year.
    The Jeffs were able to accomplish just that with seven placers, which led to a runner-up finish as a team in their home gym.
    David City took home the SNC team title with 177 points while Fairbury ended the day with 123 points. Centennial was third with 117 points and Wilber-Clatonia took fourth place with 115.5 points.

    Facing each other for the second time in three days, the Thayer Central Lady Titans were able to defeat the Lady Scouts in opening round play Monday in the Southern Nebraska Conference Basketball Tournament played at Thayer Central High School.
    The Lady Titans relied on a 15-10 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to claim the two-point win.

    It was a mixed bag of results over the weekend for the Thayer Central wrestling team, but the Titans 126 pounder Keegan Casey kept his performances consistent.
    He grappled his way to a 5-0 at the UNK Midwest Duals on Friday and followed that up with a gold medal outing at the Gibbon Bill Foster Invite on Saturday with a 4-0 record.

    The game plan for Wilber-Clatonia was simple enough-play defense and rebound.
    With it's strong defensive play, Wilber-Clatonia was able to get off to a quick start which hoisted the Wolverines to a 58-41 road win Tuesday evening over Thayer Central.

    In a battle of conference foes, it was a quick start Tuesday night by the Thayer Central Lady Titans that boosted the home team to a 62-31 victory against Wilber-Clatonia in the final game for both squads before the Christmas break.

    Thayer Central’s Aubrey Fangmeier took one on the chin, but little did his opponent know the senior’s resiliency.
    Sterling’s Ben Heir hit a shot over Fangmeier at the end of regulation to send it to overtime during Saturday’s contest. But the 6-foot-2 forward had the last say.
